Hillsdale Neighborhood Association, Hillsdale Farmer’s Market, Hillsdale Business and Professional Association, Mark A. Seder AIA, NCARB, LEED ap, Architect & Planner Revised May 2, 2007 The concept design of the proposed new Hillsdale Civic/Public Plaza is the result of Six Public Design Charrettes starting in the summer of 2006 and recently concluded. Interspersed with the Charrettes, the Architect worked with various community, market and business stakeholders in strategic and economic planning to maximize opportunities to realize the project. The Plaza Concept utilizes the existing triangular site between Rieke Elementary and the backside of the Hillsdale Shopping Center, including the existing school district parking lot in which the Farmer’s Market is currently held each Sunday. The design concept works with the existing hillside terrain, creating a repaved public plaza, partially covered and with retractable translucent tensile fabric roofs to shelter the market from rain, wind and sun when desired or required. Tall poles supporting tensioned cables for the fabric roofs are also capped with active solar panel arrays, with over 16,000 square feet of panels generating power to feed back to the power grid, potentially a revenue generator for the Market and Plaza. Utilizing the natural slope and curve of the hillside around the softball field, a new events Amphitheatre is proposed for future phases of Plaza construction. The amphitheatre potentially adds much use to the plaza, both during the market with appropriate supporting events, and at other times. A small service building, partially recessed into the Wilson hillside above the market, will add much needed permanent and fully plumbed restrooms with running water and flush toilets, as well as storage for the market and an information window. Hillsdale Plaza, as a Civic and Public gathering and events space, promises to do much for the Hillsdale Community:
